admission test blues

i've been meaning to blog but blogger just won't let me the past weeks. i was supposed to blog about something else but since i am too disappointed right now, i'll blog about this first.

this is actually dejavu. last year, i felt exactly the same way. but this time, i want to react differently. right, i should not scold my little girl because it will only make things worse. and it's really not her fault that she's no Ms. Congeniality like her mom.

okay, okay. we really need to move Marti to a "big" school this June because we want her to have a "balanced" school life. you know, where there's sports and a playground, among other things. and so, i have been busy inquiring and scheduling for admission tests/screening. each time i go to a school, i talk to the guidance counselor about how extremely shy my daughter is. i always ask if the admission test result is their sole criteria for accepting new students because i know her so well, she won't open her mouth when asked or interviewed by someone she meets the first time. or even the hundredth time. and these schools always say yes, they will only accept those who answer.

today was Marti's scheduled admission test at Sacred Heart School-Hijas. weeks before, we already motivated her to answer the teacher. she always said yes, she even mentioned she really wants to go there because her classmates Ada and Nica are going there for Kinder. but lo and behold! she was like a deaf mute at the guidance counselor's office. no amount of psychology could let her open her mouth! can you imagine my frustration? kahilakon kaayo ko! kahilakon ko cos i know she knows all those things they ask in the test. i don't know if i'm mad at Marti or at these schools who make a big deal out of these admission tests!

i'm thinking, if these schools won't accept kids who don't answer in their interview and tests because they are very shy, then our Marti will be an "out-of-school" kid! unless she stays stuck at her current school. nothing bad about the school really, it's just that we want something where she can channel some of her energy through play/sports.

Oh. It's kinda frustrating indeed and I think it's unfair as well if they won't admit the child just because she's too shy to answer during interviews. How about if they just hide and observe, and you try to talk to Marti as if they're not there and you can also point at some shapes or colors, just for them to know that she actually knows these things.

mims, get marti a paediatric OT and paediatric Speech adn language therapist mims..most likely she has selective mutism..
most children who has selective mutism are quite active and sociable kids in their own environment but arent in situations with strangers..and these kids are very bright too, sayang dili lang mailhan unsa sila ka bright because they tend to clam up infront of strangers.
ka frustrating diha sa atong school system oi..they should have something which encourages certain learning types and of different kinds..grabe ka bookish sa atong school systems..

Mi it's very unfair if the school will only base it from the initial interview. Some kids takes time to warm up. Lahi lahi man ang bata gud.

mims, i am with you! makasapot... if this was the basis of every school admission perhaps wa gyud ko ka skwela. i was like marti. you won't hear anything from me if you're a stranger.

btw, so have you chosen sacred heart na gyud?

i can relate. this is so unfair.
suggest you find a school that is open to these types of students. maybe she is just not ready for big school yet. ayaw lang pud i-push. let her take her time.
grabe pud na nga school ka outdated.
